Slinger Francisco, also known as the Mighty Sparrow, will perform tomorrow at the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College Auditorium in his Vintage Soca showcase, starting at 8 PM. Tickets are $30, available at LIME, Sunny Caribbee, Road Town Bakery, UMI Fashions, and the College Bookstore at Paraquita Bay.

As part of the Sparrow concert, the finalists for the LIME Talent Search will give their final performances. The winner will have the opportunity to travel to Jamaica to record with Gramps Morgan, who is the next artist to be featured as part of the College’s 2010-2011 Performing Arts Series.

According to CaribPlanet, Caribbean Music 101, ‘Soca is a modern form of calypso with an up-tempo beat. There is a popular misconception that soca is a fusion of American soul music and traditional calypso. Hence the name ‘so-ca,’ soul/calypso. Though this sounds plausible, it is simply not true. Soca music originated as a fusion of calypso with Indian rhythms, thus combining the musical traditions to the two major ethnic groups of Trinidad and Tobago.’
