At the A. O Shirley Recreation Ground yesterday, and after more than three hours exciting play viewed by an excited crowd, some of whom on their BVI VACATION, it came down to one play by national player Andre Adams.
Adams made an 80-yard game winning carry, to give Arawaks the BVI Invitational 7’s title, 12-7 against the visiting St. Thomas Buccaneers A.
The path to the final saw both teams overpowering the other teams in the tournament, including St. Thomas Buccaneers B, the San Juan Rugby Club and the BVI Barbarians.
Against the Buccaneers B, Jimmy Peters scored early to give the Arawaks a 5-nil lead, but the Buccaneers stormed back to take a 7-5 lead as Mark Grimes scored and then John Brugos converted the kick.
With about three minutes left, the Arawaks inserted Adams for the first time.
A superb The defensive stand resulted in a turnover, and a pass on the right wing gave Adams open field position to run. His only obstacle was a lone desperate Buccaneers defender, who missed the tackle and allowed Adams the easy score. Arawaks converted the kick for a 12-7 victory as time expired.
