Public Library Service Celebrates 70 Years
2013-05-03 14:12:51 by
The reassurance that the Government is committed to improving literacy and learning in the Virgin Islands, was given by the Hon. Myron Walyn, Minister for Education and Culture, as public libraries celebrate their 70th anniversary and Library Week 2013, in April.
"I implore all residents to visit a branch of the Library near you, be it at Road Town, Virgin Gorda, East End, Anegada or Jost Van Dyke. Connect with your link to a world of information and access a free resource where books come alive and provide fundamental building blocks for our continued development," Minister Walwyn said.
Over the past 70 years, the Public Library Service has grown in leaps and bounds and has been a very useful resource for those living in TORTOLA RENTALS. Just last year, Mr. Walwyn said, they launched their online Public Access Catalogue titled, 'VI LIBCAT' which stands for the Virgin Islands Public Access Catalog.
Library patrons can now access the Road Town Library´s holdings with an electronic library card.
Other programmes put into action by the Public Library Service include the weekly Saturday Morning Story Time Programme, with the last Saturday in each month reserved for the Dad´s Reach Out and Read Programme, and the Book Mobile Unit which travels to schools across Tortola delivering all kinds of literature.
